Holi: Festival of Colors

holi_colours_india

This last Saturday my friends Katherine, Brian, Kel and I attended Holi, the Festival of Colors, at the Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork, Utah. Holi is a Hindu festival where participants usher in Spring by throwing colored powder (or water) and burning an effigy of Holika.

Driving through Utah County (land of Mormon’s and livestock) and ending up at a Mughal-style Krisha temple is a little surreal, although the snow-covered mountains make an incredible backdrop. It was a gorgeous day, filled with llamas, vegetarian food, Indian dancing, the burning of an effigy and lots and lots of sweet smelling, colored dust.

In my search for pictures I found this wonderful article at Boston.com featuring some amazing photos from festivals in Indian cities.

Roller Derby: Saturday, March 28

The Salt City Derby Girls and my old roller derby team, The Leave it to Cleavers, are having their first bout of the season this Saturday, March 28th.

China White (my best friend, Jaime) and Dirty Pirate Hooker are still kicking ass, so go show some support. I’ll be there screaming my lil head off.

Update:

End Score: Leave It to Cleavers 131, Sisters of No Mercy 107

Beernut’s photos of the bout here

Next bout is Saturday, April 18th

And just for nostalgia’s sake, here’s an old video of when China, Pearl, Manna, Disco, Pirate, Saya and I were playing. My favorite part of the clip is when Pearl, our captain and one of my best friends, is scolding us by saying, “If you hit them once, that doesn’t mean your job is over! Keep hitting and hitting…” Love it. I think we lost this bout, but I know we didn’t lose the dance party afterward.
