Be The Match (also known as the National Marrow Donor Program) is currently sponsoring a Marrowathon and waiving the fee to join their registry. The fee (which is usually $100) will be waived for anyone who registers before June 22nd or until funding runs out. Once you have registered, Be The Match will send you a swab kit which you will use to collect cheek cells and return to them.
Finding a marrow donor is much more complicated than I realized. According to their site, even with millions of names on the registry, many people cannot find a donor. Marrow from those with diverse ethnic backgrounds are especially needed.
